the herd day, step by step

What the Bali Zoo elephant day holds, step by step

The session begins at Kampung Sumatra, inside the zoo, with a light refreshment and an introduction by an English-speaking mahout, who explains elephant behavior, the daily care routine and the welfare rules that apply throughout. Hotel pickup is listed for several resort areas, or you go straight to the zoo entrance on Jl. Raya Singapadu.

You then watch Sumatran elephants, including at the mud and river areas. The activities are elephant-led, so the pace is set by the animals, and close viewing happens only when the mahout approves it. Guests may not force, chase or control the elephants, and direct contact is limited and guided.

Lunch and zoo admission are included, and the listing runs 7 hours in all, so there is time left to walk the grounds after the session. An optional upgrade adds a guided breakfast with orangutans before the elephants.

Mahouts, and what they explain

A mahout is the elephant's keeper and handler, and on this day yours is the voice that frames everything you see. The listing says your guide speaks English, and guides on the listing speak English and Indonesian.

The briefing covers why elephants wallow, how their days are organized and what the rules are. The zoo itself explains the mud this way: elephants have no sweat glands and rely on mud to stay cool and shield their skin from the sun, and they can actually get sunburned.

Ask your guide anything you wonder about, from the animals' names to how calves are raised. Questions are part of the program, and a good mahout welcomes them.

dry or rainy months

Choosing a season for the zoo

In Bali the dry months run April through October and the rains arrive from November to March, and the tourism ministry notes that the seasons have become harder to predict. The Japan Meteorological Agency publishes rainfall normals for Denpasar, and they show July as one of the driest months, at 27.6 mm of rain, against 350.7 mm in January.

Rain matters to the elephant session in one way: the zoo pauses its mud program when heavy rain raises the river so the elephants cannot cross it safely. That is a reason to keep your plan flexible, not a reason to avoid the wet months.

The temperature chart below comes from the airport at Denpasar and is not a reading from the zoo, which lies inland. Treat it as a guide to the season, not as a forecast for the day.

the herd itself

The Sumatran elephants you will meet

Bali Zoo counts 14 elephants in its herd, and it reports the birth of two male calves. The Bali Zoo elephants are Sumatran elephants, the subspecies that WWF-UK lists as critically endangered.

That status is the reason this page and the rest of the site care about how the day is run. WWF-UK puts the wild population at fewer than 1,400 animals, and the main threat is lost habitat.

A zoo visit does not restore that habitat, and we say so plainly. What the day can offer is an accurate introduction to the species, delivered by people who look after the animals daily.

what visitors report

What guests mention again and again in guest notes

The newest reviews are warm. A guest from the United Kingdom calls it one of the greatest experiences of all time and says the time with an elephant is generous and the group is not too large. A guest from Australia praises the care session as well organized, fun and informative.

Others single out the guides, who were friendly and made sure everyone got involved, and the sense of a once-in-a-lifetime moment. One visitor found the transport reliable but felt it could have been simpler, a fair note for anyone using pickup.

Guests also mention the zoo around the session: open spaces for animals, deer at the entrance, birds you can hold and some encounters that cost a small extra fee. Budget a little for those, and read the whole rating of $78 against that background.

FAQ

Direct repliesbefore the mud and the mahouts.

What is the Bali Zoo Elephant Experience?
A guided elephant care day.

A mahout explains elephant behavior and care at Kampung Sumatra, you watch the herd, and lunch and zoo admission are included.

Can I ride an elephant at Bali Zoo?
No, riding has ended.

The zoo discontinued it effective 1 January 2026.

Can I touch the elephants?
Contact is limited and guided.

Close viewing happens only with the mahout's approval, and guests may not force, chase or control the elephants.

How many hours does the day take?
The listing shows 7 hours.

That includes the briefing, the session, lunch and time in the zoo.

Can my kids join?
From 12 years, and at least 120 cm tall.

Children who meet the height rule pay the adult price, and the zoo offers no babysitting.

Does a driver collect me?
It is listed for several areas.

Pickup covers Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, Nusa Dua, Tanjung Benoa, Jimbaran, Sanur and Ubud, and other areas may cost extra in cash.

What to carry along
A change of clothes and sunscreen.

The zoo provides no spare clothing for its mud program.

In what language is the briefing?
English and Indonesian.

The listing names both.

Is cancelling possible?
Yes, up to the day before.

The whole amount returns to you if you cancel a day or more ahead, and the date can be held without paying yet.

What if heavy rain arrives?
The mud program can pause.

The zoo pauses it when heavy rain makes the river crossing unsafe for the elephants.

rides have ended

No riding, and why that matters

You will not ride an elephant on this day. Bali Zoo confirmed it discontinued elephant riding effective 1 January 2026, to give its elephants more time for natural behaviors, social interaction and enrichment.

The change followed a Forestry Ministry circular ordering conservation institutions to end riding. Mason Elephant Park, another Bali venue, announced the end of its own riding on 25 January 2026.

If a driver or seller offers a ride anywhere on the island, treat it as out of date and say no. Our guides on this site set out the dates and the rule in more detail.

7hours

A full day, not a quick stop

The listing runs 7 hours in all.

It covers the mahout's briefing, the elephant session, lunch and zoo admission, so you can see the rest of the zoo once the elephants have finished their morning.

kit for the mud

Clothes and kit for the mud

Bring a change of clothes. The zoo says it provides no spare clothing for its mud program, and the listing's mud and water areas make a dry set worth carrying. Sandals that can get wet and sun cream and a hat for the open areas complete the list.

Leave valuables at your hotel or in a locker if one is offered, and protect your phone in a sealed bag if you want pictures. Staff took many photos for one guest, who says so in a review.

Elephant Mud Fun at Bali Zoo is the zoo's own name for a related half-day program, and the same advice applies. Wear what you are happy to see muddy. The point of the session is to be near the animals, and a guest who worries about clothes will watch the elephants less.

children and age rules

Who can take part, and who should wait

The program suits adults and children from 12 years. A child needs to stand 120 cm tall, and those who are pay the adult price. The zoo gives the same height rule for its own mud program.

The zoo offers no babysitting, so a parent whose child stays at the restaurant during the session stays responsible for that child. If your party includes younger children, split the day so that one adult is with them while the others join the elephants.

If you want a no-contact option for the whole family, the Elephant Explorer listing is strictly observation only and takes children from a younger age.

how to reach the gate

Pickup, the meeting point and the road

Hotel pickup is listed for Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, Nusa Dua, Tanjung Benoa, Jimbaran, Sanur and Ubud, and other areas might cost extra, settled in cash. The team confirms the cost before the day, and the charge is on top of the booking price.

If you go on your own, the meeting point is the zoo's main entrance on Jl. Raya Singapadu, in Singapadu, inside Sukawati, Gianyar. Its gates stay open from 09:00 until 17:00 every day.

Allow for Bali traffic whichever way you travel, and ask your hotel to write the zoo's address in Indonesian for the driver. The booking confirmation lists the meeting details.

the optional upgrade

Adding a breakfast with orangutans

An optional upgrade adds a guided breakfast with orangutans before the elephant session. A separate listing describes the breakfast as observation from a designated viewing area, with orangutan contact and feeding not permitted.

That longer day is listed at 7 to 9 hours and starts from $98, and you can choose to meet at the zoo or take a hotel transfer. Decide on the upgrade when you book, since the listing builds it into the choice of options.

If your children love apes more than elephants, or if you want a fuller zoo morning, the upgrade is a good use of the time. If you prefer a quiet start, leave it out.

Who the elephant day is meant for, and the honest caveats

It suits travelers who want to understand elephants, accept a zoo setting and like a guided program with written rules. It also suits families with children from 12 who meet the height rule.

It does not suit anyone who objects to captive elephants on principle. We also found no independent welfare listing for the zoo, whereas a different Bali park is listed Gold by an outside standards body, and we say so rather than imply more than we know.

Drop the booking a day or more before the start and the refund is complete, while payment can wait, which lowers the risk of trying it. Read the rules, then decide.
