Both keep Sumatran elephants and both stopped rides in January. They differ in setting, origin story, outside audit and what a visit asks of you. Here is the comparison, line by line, from what each venue and its certifier publish.

Two venues, two kinds of day

Mason Elephant Park and Lodge describes itself as a park and a lodge with a rescued herd at its centre, and it lists opening hours of 8am to 6pm.7 Its address is in Taro, in the Tegallalang district of Gianyar, and its own address line still uses the street name Jalan Elephant Safari Park.8 That street name may be one reason the older wording keeps turning up in searches.

Bali Zoo is a zoo first and an elephant program second. It sits on Jl. Raya Singapadu inside Sukawati in Gianyar and keeps its gates open from 09:00 until 17:00 every day.9 The elephant sessions are products inside a larger zoo day with lunch and admission, not the reason the place exists.

That difference shapes everything else. At the park, you choose among elephant-centered activities; at the zoo, you add an elephant session to a wider animal visit. Neither is wrong, but they suit different travelers, and a mismatch between what a traveler expects and what the day contains is the easiest way to be disappointed, whichever place you pick. Read the program text before you pay, and decide whether you want a full zoo day or an elephant-centered one.

The herds and where they came from

Mason says none of its elephants was taken directly from the wild. They were rescued from Sumatran containment camps in 3 missions, the last in 2004, and carried more than 1,700 km by truck and ferry to Bali.13,10 The elephants at Mason Elephant Park number over 30 Sumatran animals, as the certifier lists them, and the park says 6 calves have been born there, the first siblings in 2009 and the latest, Krisna, in 2020.2,11

Bali Zoo does not publish a rescue story of that kind. Its herd stands at 14 elephants, and it reports the birth of two male calves as a sign of a safe and supportive environment.3,14 The zoo describes its elephants as Sumatran in its own program text.15

For a traveler, this means Mason offers a clearer origin narrative and Bali Zoo a more modest one. If the idea of an animal rescued from a camp matters to you, Mason answers it directly. If you are content with a zoo that publishes its numbers and its rules, the zoo is a straightforward choice.

What the ticket gives you at each place

Mason lists general admission as a visit with meal and transport not included, with hand-feeding and up-close encounters.17 Its everyday inclusions include a museum with a mammoth skeleton replica, a treetop walkway and an educational talk 4 times daily.18 On top of admission it sells Jumbo Wash, Wash and Bathe, Picnic, Wellness Walk and Sunset tours, and the Wash and Bathe tour includes a breakfast buffet and transfers.6

At the zoo, general admission is a separate ticket, and the elephant programs are packages. Elephant Mud Fun is listed at IDR 1,500,000 for an adult, or IDR 1,700,000 with hotel pickup, and Elephant Explorer is listed at the same adult price for a guided ranger-car visit.19,20 Those are the zoo's own rupiah prices as it states them.

Our guided care day sits in a different pricing system: it is booked through GetYourGuide from $78 and bundles lunch and zoo admission. We do not set the two side by side as like for like, because the bundles differ.

Riding: the rule and the dates

Indonesia's Forestry Ministry, through its conservation directorate, issued Circular Letter No. 6 of 2025 ordering an end to elephant riding performances at conservation institutions.21 Wild Welfare reports the directive applies to all conservation institutions and zoos with immediate effect.22

Bali Zoo confirmed riding was discontinued effective 1 January 2026.4 World Animal Protection said on 19 January 2026 that Mason was still offering rides.23 Mason then received a first warning on 13 January 2026, passed a deadline on 21 January and announced an end to all riding on 25 January 2026.12,5

One detail deserves honesty. At the time we read it, the values page on Mason's own site still carried a section headed Elephant Rides, The Facts, defending rides done ethically.24 The park announced the opposite in January, so treat that page as out of date, and ask the park directly if the question matters to you.

Welfare evidence, side by side

Mason points to Gold Certification from the Asian Captive Elephant Standards and says reaching it meant complying with 8 sets of accreditation across 191 areas of evaluation.25,26 It also says it follows a no-punishment policy for its mahouts, and that its elephants are tethered only at meal and sleep times.27,28

For Bali Zoo the evidence is of another kind. The zoo publishes the rules of its programs: 120 cm as the lowest child height, a requirement to bring your own change of clothes, and a pause in the mud activity when heavy rain makes the river crossing unsafe for the elephants.16,29,30 The Elephant Explorer listing calls itself strictly observation only.

Neither set of facts is a verdict, and we do not score either place. A certificate is stronger evidence than a rule on a booking page, but a venue without one can still be careful, and a venue with one can still disappoint on a given day.

Booking and the road in

Mason takes direct bookings on its own site, and its Wash and Bathe tour includes transfers, while general admission does not include them.6,17 Mason Elephant Lodge in Bali, a boutique hotel of 30 rooms inside the park, is a separate reservation.31 We sell no hotel rooms and no Mason tickets.

Our care day lists hotel pickup for Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, Nusa Dua, Tanjung Benoa, Jimbaran, Sanur and Ubud, with an extra cash charge possible for other areas. Because Taro lies north of Ubud and the zoo lies nearer the south, a pickup that fits one rarely fits the other.

Cancel the care day a day or more ahead and the whole amount returns to you, and payment can wait. Check Mason's terms on its own booking page, since cancellation rules are the operator's and we do not quote them.

Which of them should be yours

Choose Mason if you want the elephants to be the whole point, if the rescue story matters and if an outside listing carries weight with you. Allow time for Taro, which lies a distance north of the south-coast resorts.

Choose the Bali Zoo care day if you want elephants as part of a wider day, with lunch and admission folded in, a mahout who talks you through the care routine and a booking that costs nothing to cancel until the day before.

If you cannot decide, ask yourself what you would do on a rainy morning. The zoo pauses its mud activity when the river runs high, so a flexible plan for the zoo day helps, and a spare set of dry clothes helps more.30 Either way, skip anyone who offers a ride, which both venues have ended.
