The tickets the zoo actually sells

Bali Zoo sells general admission, single programs and combined programs. General admission is a ticket for the zoo itself, with a jungle encounter, an animal presentation, a bird presentation, a waterplay area and insurance.6 Single programs add one activity, such as Elephant Mud Fun, Elephant Explorer or Behind Closed Doors, and combined programs join two.

The zoo calls itself the island's first and only zoo, and says it is a place to learn the behavior of over 500 animals.7,8 Those are the zoo's own claims. For planning, what matters is the structure: admission is the base, and each elephant program is priced on top as its own product.

General admission: price, hours and last entry

General admission on the international price line of the zoo costs adults IDR 395,000 and children IDR 280,000.1 A separate domestic line is also shown, at IDR 140,000 for adults and IDR 100,000 for children.10 We do not interpret the lines beyond what the zoo prints, and a visitor should check the line that applies on the booking page.

Doors open at 09:00 and close at 17:00, while general admission accepts its last check-in at 16:00.2,3 If you plan a full zoo day, arrive well before the last check-in, because the zoo is large and a late arrival leaves little time.

On site the facilities include wheelchair access, a restaurant, parking, an ATM, a praying room, wifi and an in-zoo shuttle.11 The ticket is labelled non-refundable on the zoo's own site, so settle your date before you pay.6

The elephant programs at the zoo's own prices

Elephant Mud Fun is listed at IDR 1,500,000 for an adult, or IDR 1,700,000 with hotel pickup.4 Elephant Explorer, a guided ranger-car visit lasting 1.5 hours, is listed at IDR 1,500,000 per adult and IDR 1,070,000 per child.5,14

Behind Closed Doors, an afternoon program from 4 to 6 PM, is listed at IDR 900,000 per adult and IDR 630,000 per child.12 A combined Elephant Mud Fun and Behind Closed Doors afternoon is listed at IDR 1,950,000 per adult, or IDR 2,150,000 with pickup.13

For Mud Fun the zoo sets 120 cm as the lowest child height, with children of that height paying the adult price, and it asks every guest to bring a change of clothes.15,9 If your children are shorter, the Explorer or an admission ticket is the realistic alternative.

Refunds, pickup and what is bundled

The zoo labels its tickets and packages non-refundable on its own site.6 Our care day, booked through GetYourGuide, returns the whole amount when you cancel a day or more ahead, and payment can wait. That difference alone is worth money if your plans might change.

Pickup differs too. The zoo prices its Mud Fun package at IDR 1,700,000 with pickup and IDR 1,500,000 without.4 Our care day lists hotel pickup for Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, Nusa Dua, Tanjung Benoa, Jimbaran, Sanur and Ubud, with an extra cash charge possible for other areas.

Lunch and admission are in the care day listing, and groups of more than 20 receive a buffet lunch instead. Read the inclusions line by line, because a cheap-looking ticket that leaves out lunch and transport may cost more once you add both.

Choosing your package

If you only want to see the zoo, buy admission or an entrance listing and arrive before the last check-in. If you want elephants without a heavy commitment, the Explorer is the shortest elephant program, and our care day is the fuller one.

If your day includes an early start, the breakfast-and-elephants listing runs 7 to 9 hours, so it needs the whole morning and the early afternoon. If you have a mixed party, with children under the height rule, plan the elephant program for the adults and a zoo entrance for the family, if the program allows it.

Whatever you choose, book against the weather. The zoo says the Mud Fun program can pause when heavy rain makes the river crossing unsafe for the elephants, so leave a little slack in the day.16

Planning the visit around the numbers

Work backward from the last check-in. If the zoo closes at 17:00 and the last general-admission check-in is 16:00, a late start leaves you with little more than a walk around the grounds.2,3 Programs have their own session times, so check the one you buy.

The wet season in Bali runs from November to March and the dry season from April to October, though the tourism ministry says the seasons have become less predictable.17,18 A zoo visit works in either, and the main effect of rain is on the elephant program, not on general admission.

Finally, decide how you will pay. Rupiah prices on the zoo's site stay in rupiah, platform prices appear in your currency at a reference rate, and the exact amount appears at checkout. Keep your confirmation on your phone and the zoo's address on hand for the driver.

Families, groups and special cases

Families should read the age and height rules before choosing. The care day suits adults and children from 12 years, a child needs to stand 120 cm tall, and those who are pay the adult price. The zoo gives the same 120 cm rule for its own Mud Fun program, and children under that height may not enter the mud area.15

The zoo offers no babysitting, so a parent whose child waits at the restaurant stays responsible for that child during the program. If your party has mixed ages, decide in advance who joins the elephant session and who stays with the younger children, and book the tickets to match.

Larger parties benefit from a small rule: for groups of more than 20, the care day serves a buffet lunch as an alternative. If you are organizing a big outing, write to the booking platform before you pay, and keep the reply with your confirmation.
