Elephant riding in Bali: where it stands and what replaced it

Rides were once the signature of Bali's elephant venues. After a national directive and two sets of warnings, the two best-known ones stopped in January. This guide gives the rule, the dates, the voices for and against, and what visitors can do instead.

The short answer for travelers

You cannot ride an elephant at either of the two venues most visitors mean when they say elephants in Bali. Both announced the end of riding in January, and the national rule behind it applies to all conservation institutions and zoos in Indonesia.4

The keyword people type, a Bali elephant ride, still brings up old photographs, old blog posts and a few booking pages that were never updated. A photograph of a visitor on an elephant in Bali is therefore very likely from before the change, and the activity it shows is no longer on the program.2,3

What replaced it is not nothing. Both venues continue to run elephant programs built around feeding, washing, mud and guided observation, and the next sections show the facts behind each so that you can choose with the right picture of what happened.

The national rule behind the change

Indonesia's Forestry Ministry, through its Directorate General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation, issued Circular Letter No. 6 of 2025 ordering the termination of elephant riding performances at conservation institutions.1 The directive came out late in the year and applies with immediate effect, according to Wild Welfare.4

It did not come from nowhere. Two Indonesian zoos, TSI Bogor and TSI Prigen, had already stopped riding in 2024, and a regional zoo association had publicly opposed the practice.7 In December 2025 the Bali conservation agency asked attractions to show greater respect for elephants and to move away from riding.5

The head of the Bali agency put the position plainly in January: all conservation institutions are required to stop elephant riding and to begin moving toward more educational, innovative and ethical wildlife tourism.8 That sentence is the clearest statement of what the authorities expect to replace the old program.

Bali Zoo: the date and the stated reason

Travel Weekly reports that, effective 1 January 2026, Bali Zoo confirmed it had discontinued elephant riding to give its elephants more time for natural behaviors, social interaction and enrichment.2 Under the headline Bali Zoo ends elephant rides, World Animal Protection reported the announcement on 19 January 2026.10

The same report says Bali Zoo and the three other venues that have ended the practice are members of the Southeast Asian Zoos and Aquariums Association.11 That membership is context, not proof of welfare standards, and we do not treat it as a certificate.

The zoo today describes its elephant offers as Elephant Mud Fun and Elephant Explorer, and it counts 14 elephants in its herd.12,13 The Explorer listing calls itself strictly observation only, which is a long way from a ride.

Mason: warnings, a missed deadline, an announcement

Mason Elephant Park took longer. World Animal Protection said on 19 January 2026 that some Bali venues, Mason among them, were still offering riding.14 The park had received a first warning letter on 13 January 2026 and was given a deadline of 21 January 2026.6

It did not fully stop by that date, and a second warning followed on 21 January.6 A third notice could have been used as grounds to revoke the park's operating permit.6,15 On 25 January 2026 the president director of the company that manages the park announced the end of all riding in a signed statement.3

That statement covers tourists and any other commercial purpose. The head of the conservation agency supervised the cessation at the park that day, according to the news agency Antara.16 One loose end remains: the park's own values page still carried a section defending rides when we read it, so treat that page as outdated.17

What the critics say, and what they leave out

World Animal Protection describes elephant riding as one of the cruellest captive animal entertainment offerings, and welcomed the Bali Zoo decision as a step in the right direction.18 That is the view of an advocacy group, quoted here as such.

The group's position is that bathing and washing programs deserve questions too. We do not take a side in that debate on this page, because the evidence for each program differs and we do not have an independent audit of any one of them. What we can say is what each venue lists and what each rule requires.

If your view is that no close contact is acceptable, the observation-only Explorer listing is the closest match, and a distance-viewing visit to a venue is another. If you accept guided contact under rules, read the rules first, which the checklist on this page helps you do.

Why one travel company stopped elephant rides

Intrepid Travel on YouTube · The film stays still until you press play.

Made Yanie Mason said the company had officially ended all elephant riding activities as of that date, both for tourists and for any other commercial purposes.

What replaced the rides on the program

At Bali Zoo the elephant sessions are Elephant Mud Fun, a half-day package priced at IDR 1,500,000 for an adult with the zoo's own booking, and Elephant Explorer, a guided ranger-car visit with feeding sessions run by mahouts.12,13 Our care day is a third format, with an English-speaking mahout and elephant-led activities.

On the care day, close viewing happens only when the mahout approves, guests may not force, chase or control the elephants, and direct physical contact is limited and guided. The zoo adds that the mud activity pauses when heavy rain makes the river crossing unsafe for the elephants.19

Mason's list is built around general admission with hand-feeding, plus Wash and Bathe, Jumbo Wash, Picnic, Wellness Walk and Sunset tours.9,20 Compare the full comparison on our page about Mason and the zoo before you choose.

If someone still offers you a ride

Say no, and say why. A driver, hotel desk or street seller who offers an elephant ride in Bali is either out of date or ignoring a national directive. Neither is a reason to give them your money, and neither is a safe partner for a trip that involves animals and heavy vehicles.1

Report it where you booked. Tell the booking platform if a listing mentions riding, and leave a review that says plainly that the activity was offered after the end date. Reviews are read by the next traveler and by the platforms that rank the listings.

Do not assume a venue outside Bali has followed the rule. The directive covers Indonesian conservation institutions, and other countries have their own situation. If you travel on, apply the same test: ask whether riding is on the program and who audits the elephants' care.4

Old reviews, old photos and the dates that matter

A review from last year may describe a ride as the highlight of the day, and a photograph of a smiling visitor on an elephant may look current. Neither tells you what the venue offers now. When you read anything about elephants in Bali, find its date first, then read the content.

The simplest test is the calendar. Anything about riding that predates the first days of January 2026 describes a program the venues have since closed.2 Anything that appeared later and still describes a ride is either an error or a sign that the seller has not updated the page, and neither is a good reason to trust it.

The same caution applies to our own pages and to every guide on the topic. We have dated each claim to the source we read, and we expect the details to keep changing as the transition continues, because the conservation agency was monitoring Mason on the day the park announced its change.16 Return to the venues' own pages for the latest word.
